Win XP Newbie here

So I've been traditionally dedicated 5GB to my Win2k O/S partition and I usually have about another 2GB left even after doing all of the MS updates. So I do the same with XP, 5GB partition and without any updates, over 4GB is eaten up, LOL!

So is a 10GB partition sufficient for WinXP?

Also, I'm not too sure how to do it, but I'll prolly look into doing dual boot down the line... how large partition should Linux be given?

Well, foo, I find it funny that you're finally migrating to XP. It's only 5 years late! emoticon

If you're XP partition is 4GB, then you might be doing some things wrong. On my machine, 2.5gb is all it takes. One thing you might try is reducing your swap file size, especially if you have 1GB+ of RAM. Also, I disable System Restore, since I've never ever used it. Last, uninstall all the XP components you don't think you'll need. Mainly MSN explorer is the only large program you can eliminate. Also, make sure Hibernate is turned off, since it takes up as much space as your system RAM. Once you've done that, you should have lots of room to spare.

10GB should be plenty for XP, even with office and all the other basic programs (like some sort of AV) installed.

linux will take as much as you want it to. if you don't install X (windows) it's tiny. 4GB would be plenty. do your research before you put it on a laptop though, some models aren't well supported. i'm having to do a lot of tweaking by hand on my old gateway to get all the little things working right... god forbid i try to set up wireless or anything.

Sq, it's a fresh install of XP that's hoggin up 4+gb so it's not like I've even had the chance to d/l a lot. I'll check a few of the things u pointed out.

As u know, doin DIY has rarely been 100% problem free esp for me.... seems that the Audigy2 card was causin some conflicts with the built in network card and I couldn't access the net!!! ... after many hours, I ended up yanking it out and I had to run some "WinsockXPfix". But honestly, I'm not sure it that fixed it, or perhaps I wasn't cold booting enough as I changed network settings... I kept restarting rather than shutting down. Well, the onboard sound of the Asrock mobo will have to suffice.

Try putting both cards in different slots. Sometimes cards won't work properly in some slots, especially sound cards. emoticon
